Scott Franson
About Scott

Scott's life as a musician began as a drummer in the school orchestra in the 5th grade. He later switched to private guitar lessons at the age of ten, continuing thru high school in Fairfax, VA with well know teacher, Jeff Ponder. Forming a band called Equinox he played for various school functions, competitions and private parties.

Scott then began attending Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and played acoustic guitar in nightclubs in and around Richmond, VA.  His classical guitar education began upon entering the Classical Guitar Department at VCU where his principle instructor was John Patakula. John is the head of the VCU guitar program and is a former student of the world renowned classical guitarist Jesus Silva. Scott’s appreciation and love of classical guitar flourished under John's tutelage.

Scott earned a B.A. degree in Performance of Classical Guitar with a minor in Piano.  His honors include playing the solo in Vivaldi’s Concerto in D with the Guitar Orchestra and winning 1st place in the American String Teacher's Association Competition. While a student at VCU, Scott also taught guitar for the Community School for Performing Arts. Scott also studied Spanish and Classical Guitar with the well respected Guitarist Gordon Kreplin.  Gordon taught guitar at VCU 10 years before Scott arrived and left to travel the world while studying guitar with the worlds most sought after players including Andres Segovia.

For six years as lead guitarist and songwriter he performed and traveled the Eastern Seaboard with the popular jam band "The Headstone Circus". Since settling in on the Outer Banks of North Carolina in 1993, Scott has become well known for his wide ranging repertoire, his seemingly effortless ability to improvise, and his genuine showmanship.  From his gritty voiced, psychedelic guitar laced originals to beautifully executed classical works and unexpected new twists on classic rock and country, Franson seldom disappoints.

In the Spring of 2000, Scott took the next step in his career and ventured into the world of digital recording by founding The Ranch Recording Studio which has since grown into his own independent label, Ranch Records. He has produced and mastered music for other musicians such as legendary blues guitarist Mojo Collins, multi-platinum country songwriter Tommy Lee James, Out-N-The Cold with Nashville's incomparable Martin Parker (Vince Gill, Patty Loveless, Allison Krauss, Ricky Skaggs) on drums and production assistance, 9:58, Dawn Burke, This Too Shall Burn, Low Standards, Dizzl., Formula, Mudd Flap Mafia, Carson Huggins, Leslie Buck, Club Violin, Brandon Wilson, Molasses Creek

Scott’s commercial recording credits include Cosmopolitan Magazine, Quagmires, Turf’s Up Restaurant, Ocean Atlantic Rentals, and has also contributed to several film scores including Warner Brothers "Nights in Rodanthe" with Richard Gere and Diane Lane

Scott has released 4 full length albums.  His first album of original music, Finally, is a wild ride across musical genres with songs ranging from introspective folk ballads to driving electronic anthems.  The follow up to Finally, Techno-ology, further explores the world of electronic music.  Classical Guitar is a return to his roots, sharing his versions of some of his classical favorites on Spanish Guitar.  His latest release, More Me, is an introspective but unpretentious collection of modern folk rock with solid production and plenty of the blazing fast yet melodic leads Franson is best known for.
